Influence of Repeated Experience on Unsignalized Intersection Crossing Behavior of Drivers without Right-of-Way

چکیده
Collisions at intersections account for more than 50 percent of total traffic accidents in Japan [1]. The most common cause of these incidents is human error. Therefore, understanding the nature of driving behavior at intersections is essential for developing and implementing accident prevention measures. This study aimed to examine the influence of a driver's repeated experience with crossing un-signaled intersections without the right-of-way. Specifically we examined the change of start position, identified as a point where drivers step on the gas pedal immediately prior to entering intersections. Also we assessed the relationship between driving behavior at intersections and responses to a Driving Style Questionnaire (DSQ) [2]. Repeated experience often leads to habituation, and driving behavior is no exception to this [3]. For instance, many drivers begin to drive faster on narrow streets as they gain experience [4]. At the same time, there is a real possibility that drivers acquire proficiency through experience. In the interests of improving traffic safety, this study aimed to describe the nature of changes in driving behavior as drivers experience repeated encounters with interactions.

Pedestrian Gap Acceptance Logit Model in Unsignalized Crosswalks Conflict Zone
Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users. For evaluating and modifying pedestrian safety in unsignalized crosswalks, the first important issue is to identify and explore factors affecting the interaction behavior of pedestrians andvehicles in conflict areas. By analyzing those factors and determining how they affect road user's behavior, we canrepresent the plans and proc...
متن کاملEffect of Gap Acceptance Behavior of the Right Turning Vehicles on the Major Road Stream for Uncontrolled Three-Legged Intersections under Mixed Traffic Conditions
Uncontrolled intersections are the intersections where there are no external signs or signals to control the movement of vehicles. In mixed traffic conditions priority rules are often violated by the road users. In All-way-stop-controlled intersections (AWSC), the vehicle should stop themselves before they enter the intersection and should check whether any vehicles are present in the other app...
متن کاملWhat does the driver look at? The influence of intersection characteristics on attention allocation and driving behavior.
One of the main contributing factors with intersection accidents is lack of information due to attention allocation. In many cases, drivers fail to yield right of way to other traffic participants. One reason is that drivers have inappropriate expectations about a traffic situation. They allocate their attention primarily to certain areas of the intersection but neglect others. In a driving sim...
متن کاملThe Development of Parameters and Warning Algorithms for an Intersection Bus-Pedestrian Collision Warning System
This study presents the conceptual design of an intersection bus-pedestrian collision warning system for bus drivers approaching an intersection. The basic parameters of the proposed design concept include the bus drivers’ perception-reaction time, the emergency deceleration rate of the bus, and pedestrian walking speed. A bus driving simulation was designed and conducted to analyze bus drivers...
متن کاملIdentification of Hazardous Situations using Kernel Density Estimation Method Based on Time to Collision, Case study: Left-turn on Unsignalized Intersection
The first step in improving traffic safety is identifying hazardous situations. Based on traffic accidents’ data, identifying hazardous situations in roads and the network is possible. However, in small areas such as intersections, especially in maneuvers resolution, identifying hazardous situations is impossible using accident’s data. In this paper, time-to-collision (TTC) as a traffic conflic...
